Congratulations to the three Denbigh Patriots teams that made it to the Super Bowl, and to the D American 6-year-old team who finished their season with a 5-1 winning record. We have gone from 1 to 3 teams in the championship, which is a big turnaround. Next year we look to get more teams in. Good job by all coaching staffs and athletes!

Congratulations to the 2012 C-American Denbigh Patriots, who captured their third straight Super Bowl title last night. It was a thrilling game with a scoreless first half full of strong defense from both the Patriots and the Deer Park Cougars.

The Cougars started the second half with a 50+ yard kickoff return for a touchdown and scored the extra point, giving them a big momentum swing. However, it was short lived as Denbigh’s Quadir Pettaway responded immediately with a 50+ yard kickoff return of his own, and completed a pass to Andrew Littell for the 2-point conversion. The score was 8-7 and the Patriots never looked back, sealing the game with a touchdown run by Bryce Phipps.

Though it sounds a bit cliche, we truly respect the Cougars — they have been our toughest competitor all year and they play hard and fair. We congratulate them on their winning season.

The game ended with a final score of 14-7 and was followed by a great Patriot celebration! Here are just a couple of photos from the night…

The C-American Denbigh Patriots thank Mike, J.R., Heather, and the entire Chili’s wait staff for taking such good care of us tonight! It was a fun evening after a big win, but definitely bittersweet as we said goodbye to Coach Leon, who begins his Army career this month. We’ll all miss Leon’s enthusiasm, energy, and friendship. He’s made a huge impact on our boys (and on his fellow coaches, too!). Thanks, Leon!

[VIDEO] We couldn’t have asked for better weather for the 53rd annual Denbigh Day Parade and Festival. The Patriots teams gathered at Denbigh High School – along with hundreds of other people representing community groups, public safety organizations, and political campaigns — and marched enthusiastically along Denbigh Boulevard. This was the first parade for most of the D-American boys, and as you can see they had a ball! Here’s my video from the big day.

After the parade, several C-American Patriots stayed for the Festival to eat, visit the vendors, and (of course) join a huge pickup game of football! Several teammates also helped the team by handing out sponsor flyers to every business at the festival. Despite their initial complaints, after  introducing themselves and giving a flyer to the first vendor they said, “This is actually fun!” The boys were friendly, polite, and professional: great representatives for Denbigh youth football!

The boys collected about $80 in cash donations and several vendors promised future contributions. Thanks to Pop, Greg, John, Isaiah, Quadir, Man-Man, Bryce, Savion, Adryan, and AJ Brown for helping the team!

What happens when 6 year olds take to the field? A lot of tackles, several dog piles, long runs and a few tears. Make no mistake: these little Patriots are following in the footsteps of C-American with a few surprises: including completed passes and complex defensive formations. In the midst of all things football, you’ll also laugh out loud if you listen closely…

Here are three things overheard among our little 6 year olds:

  • “Dad, the coaches always put the starters in first. Why?”
  • “Let me see your face!” — Coach during Game 1, still learning the players by their jersey numbers
  • “Coach, I need my earpads to touch my ears.”

For more intense – yet adorable –  football, check out the newest Denbigh Patriots in Game 2 this Saturday!

In a game marred by numerous penalties, the Denbigh Patriots bounced back from their tie against Deer Park with a 6 – 0 win against Boys and Girls Club. Quadir Pettaway scored the game’s only touchdown on a 2 yard scamper. Earlier in the second quarter, Pettaway completed an eight yard pass to Gregory Prentiss that put the ball on the 22 yard line. After delay of game penalties moved the ball back to the opponents 38 yard line, Quadir Pettaway made the game’s key play with a 40 yard scramble down the left sideline. Pettaway was sprung free on the play by a vicious block from Bryce Phipps. Replay did confirm that Pettaway scored on the play when he dove to the pylon. Not to be deterred, the team rallied for the score on the subsequent play.

During the second half, Bryce Phipps paced the offense with several time consuming runs and two short receptions to move the chains and ate up the clock. Noah Evans, Kupenda “Man-Man” Young, and Derick “Pop” Nixon clogged up the interior line as the defense stepped up, holding the Spartans to 18 yards and zero first downs. Known for their stingy defense, the Patriots prevented two scoring drives with key interceptions by Quadir Pettaway. Throughout the game, several athletes recorded multiple tackles, to include Adrian Payne, Kupenda “Man-Man” Young, Vincent Cousins, Quadir Pettaway, Andrew Littell, Bryce Phipps, Gregory Prentiss, “Pop” Nixon, Zema “Dugga” Fling, and Isaiah Davis.

We came across a new video feature tonight and thought it would be great to add to the site for film study.  Now you can watch game footage with slow motion, zoom, and instant replay – how cool is that!

The new controls are at the bottom of each video… Here’s a sample (Unfortunately this uses Flash so it won’t show up on your iPad or iPhone). The downside is that this feature really slows down the site… for now we think it’s worth the wait but we want to know what you think!

Paul Stephen Davis (#2) and Preston Prentiss (#47) have watched their C-American big brothers Isaiah (#1) and Greg (#81) from the sidelines for years. Now it’s their turn to shine as part of the D-American 6-year old team. These new Patriots beat Deer Park 14-13 in their first-ever tackle football game. The boys didn’t give up when they fell behind 13-7 and protected their win with two game-saving tackles. Congratulations, Denbigh Blue!

In case you missed reading about last year’s Super Bowl victory in the Daily Press, here’s our little blurb as it appeared in Community News on November 28, 2011 at the end of a list of all Newport News Super Bowl results:

D National: Isaiah Davis ran for a 34-yard TD, Avery Scott hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass from Quadir Pettaway, and Bryce Phipps ran for a 5-yard score to power 7-1 Denbigh past the Boys and Girls Club 19-6. The Spartans’ only score came on a 14-yard pass reception by Jayden Wooten-Ellis from Jamorea Walker with 1:06 remaining.

The C-American Denbigh Patriots recovered from a difficult 1st half to keep the Deer Park Cougars from getting a first down in the 2nd. The Cougars scored on the Patriots with a long touchdown run and were denied the extra point. Isaiah Davis scored the Patriots’ first touchdown of the season, tying the game at 6-6. Second half highlights included hard hits from several Patriots and a forced fumble and recovery by Andrew Littell. Neither team scored in the second half; the game ended in a 6-6 tie.
